nightlife, and heavenly food, New Orleans if one of the favorite city vacation spots in
the United States. The heart of the city is the French Quarter. Its wrought-iron balconies, colorful streets, elegant architecture, jazz clubs, and world-renowned restaurants make exploring its nooks and crannies a favorite pastime. Within the Quarter, Jackson Square and the French Market are home to strolling musicians, sidewalk artists, and cafes-the most legendary of all being Cafe du Monde, which has been serving mouth-watering beignets (golden-brown, square, puffed pastries, sprinkled with powdered sugar) and coffee flavored with chicory since the 1860's. Make sure to also try some of the local specialties such as seafood gumbo, Cajun and Creole dishes, and oysters Rockefeller. After dinner, New Orleans comes alive. Throughout the city, but concentrated in the French Quarter, are legendary jazz an blues clubs, piano bars, nightclubs, and other venues to keep you entertained into the wee hours of the morning. Outside the French Quarter, there are plenty of other attractions. Drive through the Garden District, full of elegant 19th-century homes. Visit the Audubon Zoo, one of the ten best in the country with more than 1,500 animals, or the Aquarium of the Americas, with more than 7,500 specimen from North and South America. Take a tour to one of the many grand plantation homes outside of the city to explore the grandeur of days past. Or, extend your experience of Southern hospitality and combine New Orleans with a stay in Gulfport/Biloxi. |
